Panic on the streets of Tesco.
Panic on the streets of Sainsbury’s… In case you haven’t heard, the UK government introduced a 5p plastic bag charge last week.
The best thing about the 5p plastic bag charge is that the cupboard next to my sink is now worth £672,348.

Considering we Irish pay 25c for a plastic bag with little to no complaint, and have done so for about 13 years now, you would expect such a minor tax to pass of without incident.
Instead, a sizeable portion of English shoppers have lost their damn minds.
A Tesco in Manchester has started security tagging its shopping baskets after one-third of its whole supply was stolen in the last week.

That’s right, there are people out there who, when asked to pay five pennies extra in order to protect the environment, will steal the shopping basket they used to hold their items.
Ireland is not perfect, but we can console ourselves that by and large, we did not respond to the introduction of a plastic bag charge by stealing a huge number of shopping baskets.
