According to the latest statistics from the Health & Safety Authority (HSA), farming accounted for roughly 40 per cent of all workplace deaths in Ireland in 2013.

A total of 17 people lost their lives in the ‘crop and animal production, hunting and related service activities’ sector here in Ireland in 2013, according to the latest workplace death statistics released by the HSA.

While the figure is the lowest it has been for the past three years, farming still comes out on top as Ireland’s most dangerous job. The second most dangerous sector in Ireland in 2013 was construction where a total of 11 fatalities occurred throughout the year. This is the highest recorded figure that the construction industry has seen since 2008.

Fishing, aquaculture, transportation and storage come in as Ireland’s joint third most dangerous jobs with four deaths occurring in each of the four sectors in 2013.

In total, 46 people lost their lives in workplace accidents in 2013, which is only two less than 2012.
