The Father Ted tribute to Jack Charlton deserves to be watched today

Alan Loughnane

Father Ted Jack Charlton

Brilliant.

Jack Charlton sadly passed away on Friday at the age of 85. Big Jack is gone but he will never be forgotten.

Two of the most culturally significant moments in Ireland in the 90s were Father Ted and Italia ’90.

Someone once described the hysteria of Italia 90 as if “every parish’s local GAA team were suddenly the best team in the world” and that’s a fairly accurate description.

And of course, we all know about Father Ted and the lasting impact it had on Ireland which carries through to this day.

The two were combined on screen in the mid 90s in a special tribute to Charlton, who was stepping away as manager of the Republic of Ireland.

In a special episode of Kenny Live, hosted by Pat Kenny, Dermot Morgan and Ardal O’Hanlon’s characters Father Ted Crilly and Father Douglas McGuire sent a special video message to Big Jack.

It seems appropriate to watch it back today.
