Not everyone in this country is overly concerned on the upcoming referendum concerning the abolition of the Seanad, but tennis great Bjorn Borg has taken a keen interest all of a sudden.

Not everyone in this country is overly concerned on the upcoming referendum concerning the abolition of the Seanad, but tennis great Bjorn Borg has taken a keen interest all of a sudden.

Why would the 11-time Grand Slam champion, a man considered one of the all-time tennis greats, be interested in whether we retain our senate we hear you ask.

Well it’s all to do with an image that the Fine Gael Facebook page decided to use in its campaign supporting the Seanad abolition.

The image shows the Swede at the peak of his playing powers in celebration with the words ‘He seems happy – The Swedes got rid of their senate in 1970’. In fact, it seems like he isn’t happy at all thanks to the image.

Bjorn Borg

According to today’s Irish Independent, the Swede rallied after his management team got wind of the picture that was used without their consent and the image was quickly removed from the page.

The picture has managed to serve up more publicity to the campaign, though the party are expected to apologise to Borg over the incident.

The party should really have known that Borg would have come across the photo. He wasn’t Bjorn yesterday after all.
