Five dead following mass shooting at gay nightclub in Colorado

At least 18 people have been wounded following the attack.

Five people have been killed following a nightclub shooting in America.

The shooting took place at a gay club in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Saturday night, 19 November. At least 18 people have been injured as a result of the incident.

According to Reuters, the alarm was raised just before midnight, with police arriving at the scene shortly afterwards. An individual believed to be the suspected shooter was located inside the club and has been taken into custody.

It has been reported that people attending the nightclub subdued the attacker. Colorado Springs police Lieutenant Pamela Castro told reporters that the suspect has received treatment for their injuries.

Lieutenant Castro has not revealed what kind of firearm was used during the attack, nor has any motivation for the assault been officially communicated.

Staff at gay and lesbian venue Club Q, where the mass shooting took place, have described the incident as a “hate attack”.

“Club Q is devastated by the senseless attack on our community,” begins a Facebook post uploaded on Sunday.

“Our prayers and thoughts are with all the victims and their families and friends. We thank the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack.”

The Club Q shooting provokes memories of the 2016 attack on Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. On the night of 12 June, Omar Mateen killed 49 people and wounded a further 53 in one of the most devastating mass shootings in American history.

Mateen was shot dead by police and the incident was later declared as a terrorist attack by investigating authorities.
