The FSAI have issued a recall on all Kinder products from Ferrero.
Five people have been hospitalised after contracting Salmonella amid a massive
Kinder products recall.
As the
European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC) reports, there have been 15 recorded food poisoning cases in Ireland, and of these 15, five patients have been hospitalised.
It's understood that the majority of those affected are under the age of 10.
In total, there have been 150 confirmed and probable cases of Salmonella in Ireland, the UK, France, Belgium and Germany.
The
Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has warned consumers not to eat any batches of all Kinder products. These are Schoko Bons, Kinder Surprise, Kinder Mini Eggs, Kinder Egg Hunt Kit and Kinder Surprise due to the possible presence of Salmonella.
The most common symptom of Salmonella is diarrhoea, which can be bloody at times. Other symptoms include fever, headache and abdominal cramps. The first symptoms typically develop between 12 and 36 hours after the initial infection, though this time period can range from 6 to 72 hours.
The FSAI state that the illness normally lasts for 4 to 7 days, and that the diarrhoea can occasionally be severe enough to require hospitalisation.
Older people, infants and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to experience a more severe illness with Salmonella.
As part of the recall, retailers have been asked to remove Kinder products from circulation.
