Five more people with Covid-19 have died, 19 new cases

The Department of Health has confirmed that five more people have died from Covid-19 in Ireland.

It brings the total number of Covid-19 related deaths to 1,695. This number reflects the denotification of one death.

The department said that it was informed of another 19 confirmed cases, bringing the total here to 25,231.

Validation of data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre has resulted in the denotification of three cases.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said: “The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet again tomorrow to review Ireland’s ongoing response and preparedness to COVID-19.

“NPHET will also review updated World Health Organisation guidance on face coverings and consider communications regarding appropriate use of face coverings in community settings.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Dr Cillian De Gascun, Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory, urged the public to wear face coverings when physical distancing cannot be maintained.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Today with Sarah McInerney, Dr De Gascun said that coverings should be worn while shopping or on public transport but said that they do not need to be worn when driving or in the open air.
