Five popular Irish beaches have failed to meet the minimum clean water standards

Five different counties

Sewage pollution is to blame.

The Environmental Protection Agency has been testing the water in beaches and lakes around Ireland and while it’s mostly positive news, there are some areas for concern.

Five beaches and one lake failed to meet minimum clean water standards which means swimmers are 10% more at risk of picking up a bug.

The EPA has revealed that the locations failed because of sewage pollution.

Youghal

The locations that failed the tests are as follows:

  • Youghal Front Strand, Cork.
  • Ardmore, Waterford.
  • Duncannon, Wexford.
  • Rush South beach, Dublin.
  • Clifden and Ballyloughane, Galway.
  • Lilliput on Lough Ennell, Westmeath.

Overall it was good news though as 103 of the country’s top swimming locations were classed as pristine.
