It’s been a wet one up in Donegal…

Met Eireann have issued yet another rainfall warning for Donegal with heavy spells of rain expected to hit the county over the next 24 hours.

A status yellow alert was issued for the county with the weather forecaster predicting that between 25-40 mm of rain could fall from 6pm on Thursday until 6pm on Friday.

Met Eireann said that further spells of heavy rain are expected to affect the northwest of the country through today and tomorrow.

The heaviest totals of this rainfall will fall on higher ground.

A further status yellow rainfall warning was issued for Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo. This is valid on Thursday from 3pm until 3pm on Friday.

Totals of 25 mm of rain is expected generally, but there is the potential for 35 mm on higher ground.

Donegal and Derry, in particular, have been severely affected by heavy rain and flooding over the last couple of days with the level of flooding said to be a “once in a hundred year event.”

The rain caused the flooding of homes, mudslides and sinkholes to open up on roads in Donegal.

News came earlier from RTÉ that Government Chief Whip Joe McHugh promised that immediate financial supports are being made available for residents in Donegal affected by the flooding.

Two thirds of the average rainfall for August fell in a short period between Tuesday night and and Wednesday causing havoc, swelling rivers and flooding many areas.

In Derry, many cars were washed away when the River Faughan swelled and burst its banks.

All flights in Derry Airport were grounded on Wednesday after airport terminal at Eglinton was flooded because of the torrential downpour.
