It marks another chapter in the remarkable life of one of Ireland’s most committed campaigners.

Lynn Ruane has won a seat in Seanad Éireann.

The 31-year-old from Tallaght dropped out of school at the age of 15 and spent well over a decade fighting for access to education.

Having won a place at Trinity College through an access programme for disadvantaged students, last year she was elected president of the Students’ Union.

A mother of two girls, Lynn is now heading to the Seanad.

Ruane was elected on the 15th count to the third and final seat of the University of Dublin constituency with 3,344 votes.

She beat her nearest opponent, incumbent Seán Barrett, by just 116 votes.

Following her win, Ruane thanked her supporters, “from the graduates of College, to the people in Tallaght.”
