French newspaper names Limerick teenager “child of the year” for 2016

Luke Culhane from Limerick has been named “Child of the Year” by French newspaper Mon Quotidien.

The 13-year-old proved that he is mature beyond his years back in February when he produced a video creating awareness around cyberbullying, titled Cyber Bullying: Create No Hate.

20% of Mon Quotidien voters thought that Luke was the most deserving recipient of the Child of the Year title for his efforts, with some readers sharing their own account of how Luke’s video helped them in their own lives:

“His story found a way of fighting back without violence thanks to his video. It’s a very effective method. I hope that it will help other victims,” one young woman wrote to the paper.

Back in February, Luke explained his reasons for making the video:

“I have been cyber-bullied myself so that inspired me to make this video to help raise awareness for other people about how to handle cyber-bullying,” he said

“I wanted to show that it doesn’t have to be physical bullying to hurt someone so that’s why I showed the likeness between the two types of bullying. I felt that “Safer Internet Day” was an appropriate time to release this video to create discussion around the issue.”
