Homenews

A freak tornado ripped through the Clonfert area of Galway yesterday evening, knocking down a number of trees and headstones in the process.

A massive funnel cloud formed into a tornado over Clonfert in Galway at around 6.30pm yesterday afternoon and while it’s a rare occurrence, the event won’t be forgotten by locals anytime soon. According to the BBC Northern Ireland weather department: "When a funnel cloud touches the ground it becomes a tornado." The tornado caused a lot of damage in the local area as several large (and fairly old) trees were uprooted, while a number of gravestones in the cemetery adjoining St Brendan's Cathedral were knocked over by the high winds. So far, there have been no reports of any injuries. According to Met Éireann: "Funnel clouds can form in isolated cases following heavy showers and when this happens they generate locally strong winds, similar to those reported in east Galway." Thanks to Francis Hynes for sending in the pics via Facebook.
