Garda arrested and suspended after theft of cash from Garda station

A member of An Garda Síochána was arrested and has subsequently been suspended after the theft of cash from a wallet handed into the Garda station he was working in on Thursday.

An Garda Síochána have confirmed that they are investigating a theft incident that occurred at a station in the south of the country on Thursday and that a man in his 20s was arrested as a result.

It is believed that he stole a small sum of money from a wallet that had been handed in by a member of the public and was allegedly spotted doing so on CCTV cameras.

The Garda, a probationary Garda member – all new Gardaí must serve two years’ probation before becoming full members – was arrested and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and has since been released without charge.

He is currently suspended from duty and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Investigations are ongoing.
