Know anyone up to the task?

The most senior position in An Garda Síochána, Garda Commissioner, is now being advertised to the public, who are invited to make applications for the role before the closing date early next month.

The former commissioner, Noirín O’Sullivan, announced her resignation from the role and from An Garda Síochána last year, with Dónall Ó Cualáin taking over the role as Acting Garda Commissioner after O’Sullivan stepped down.

Ó Cualáin stated that he would not be putting his name forward as a replacement for O’Sullivan and on Friday, an advertisement for the role was posted on publicjobs.ie.

The role is described as “extremely challenging, wide-ranging and high profile” and requires “an inspirational leader, accomplished senior manager and a person of utmost integrity”.

It says that Ireland’s national police and security service, “is growing, reforming and changing” and that “this is a unique opportunity to lead, manage and develop a service which is due to expand by up to 30% over the next few years”.

If that sales pitch isn’t enough to convince potential applicants to put their names forward, then the salary – “up to €250,000 may be negotiated” – might do the trick, while although experience in a policing role is “desirable”, it is not “essential” for the five-year post.

More details on the role are available on publicjobs.ie here; the closing date for applications is Thursday, 12 April.
