The incident took place close to the city centre.
Two officers have been hospitalised following a collision between their patrol car and a horse.
Speaking to JOE, Gardaí confirmed that at approximately 4.30am on the morning of Tuesday 28 August 2018, Gardaí were attending an incident on the N18 between Limerick Tunnel and Roxboro Road junction, when an official vehicle was struck by a runaway horse which was killed instantly.
The two Gardaí who were travelling in the car were taken to University Hospital Limerick with minor injuries.
Investigations are still ongoing.
