Do you have what it takes?

An Garda Síochána are inviting applications for the post of Armourer, which will be based out of An Garda Síochána headquarters in Phoenix Park in Dublin.

As you would expect of such a role, it’s not something that any Tom, Dick or Harry can apply for.

Applications for the specialist post are welcomed from candidates who are qualified as a Fitter Turner holding an Advanced Certificate Craft – Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitting at level 6 (NFQ) or an equivalent recognised qualification.

As well as that, candidates must also be a qualified Armourer with a minimum of five years’ experience and hold certification in a range of handguns, rifles and other automatic and semi-automatic weapons.

In a rather more mundane requirement, candidates must also hold a full Class B Irish driving licence or equivalent with no endorsements.

The salary for the position, which incorporates rent allowance, is €48,512.30 and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the duties listed below.

  • Inspection of all official weapons on issue to stations and members
  • Repair and maintenance of all official weapons within the force
  • Involvement with the research and development of new police weapon systems and ancillary equipment
  • Test-firing of new and repaired weapons
  • Maintaining complete and accurate records regarding repairs and parts associated with firearms repairs
  • Acceptance testing of ammunition at point of manufacture
  • Liaising with specialist units, external Government Departments and other agencies and suppliers
  • Being prepared to undergo all of the approved courses relevant to the section

The selection process, according to An Garda Síochána, may include short-listing/preliminary interview prior to applicants being called forward for main interview; the closing date for applications is July 6.

Further information on the role, including the profile, application form and notes for candidates are available here.
