The incident occurred around 8.20pm Saturday evening.

The girl, who has since been identified as Mia Lily Keogh O’Keefe, was taken from the scene to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda where she was later pronounced dead.

Her dog was also killed in the incident.

A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with the investigation and a car has been seized by Gardaí.

A close relative of Mia Lily Keough O'Keefe has set up a fundraiser for the family.

On the fundraiser they wrote: "Hi everyone, I am a close relative to the Keogh O’Keefe family, and with the permission of Mia Lily’s family, I have set up this GoFundMe page to help with the cost of her funeral and other expenses.

"On Saturday 21st February, Mia Lily was tragically struck by a car while walking her beloved dog, Bowie, on the Slane Road in Navan. She suffered catastrophic injuries and later passed away in hospital. Tragically, Bowie also lost his life.

"Mia Lily was just moments from her home when the collision occurred, and the driver did not stop. She was only 16 years old and had her whole life ahead of her. She leaves behind her heartbroken Mam Louise, Dad Stephen, her sister Katelyn, and her brothers Kai, Zack and Cole, along with so many friends and loved ones who are devastated by her loss.

"At this unimaginably painful time, we are asking for any support you can give, no matter how big or small, to help ease the financial burden on her family as they lay their beautiful girl to rest.

"Every donation and every share means more than words can say. If you're unable to donate, feel free to share. Mia Lily, we are beyond heartbroken by your loss. Thank you for your kindness and support."

The fundraiser has raised over €20,000 by the time of writing.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward. Road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area between 8:00pm and 8:45pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
