Over 450 drivers were caught breaking speed limits on 27 December alone.

As part of the Christmas and New Year road safety campaign, the Garda Traffic Corps have released the latest set of findings, revealing some shocking details about drivers around the country over the last few days.

Out of 101,900 vehicles monitored by the safety cameras, 476 vehicles were detected driving in excess of the speed limit, with some specific speeding offenders as follows:

122 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, R810 Mount Brown, Dublin 8

109 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, N25 Cloncoskoran, Dungarvan, Waterford

116 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, R446 Ballinasloe, Galway

135 km/h in a 120 km/h zone, M7 Portlaoise, Laois

However, the one that stands out was a motorcycle driver who was found to be going 198 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N5 in Drummindoo in Mayo.

Since this new road safety campaign begun on 30 November, there have been 693 arrests made on suspicion of intoxicated driving.

Of that number, 45 arrests were made on 26 and 27 of December alone.

An Garda Síochána have said that “[We] wish to thank the vast majority of drivers who drive responsibly on the roads, however there are still many who do not.”
