Clamping down…

Manchester United were in Dublin on Wednesday as they took on Sampdoria in a preseason friendly in the Aviva Stadium.

The Red Devils won the game 2-1 with the first-half producing some good football while the second was disrupted by constant changes and had all the hallmarks of a friendly.

But there was plenty of drama outside the stadium as Gardaí and other agencies launched a clampdown on counterfeit goods being sold illegally by street vendors.

It’s a common sight to see hats, scarves and headbands being sold outside games in Ireland and while it would be unfair to assume that many are flogging counterfeit gear, it’s clear that there were some doing just that on Wednesday.

Gardaí seized gear worth an estimated street value of €25,000 being sold in the streets outside the Aviva Stadium.

In a statement on their Facebook page, Gardaí said:

As part of a multi agency operation, Gardaí have seized counterfeit goods with an estimated street value of €25,000 during the Manchester United v Sampdoria match in Dublin 4 on Wednesday 2nd August 2017.

In total, the Gardaí seized approximately 225 hats, 200 placards, 140 flags and 2,220 scarves.
