A notoriously busy stretch of road.

An Garda Síochána has announced plans to increase surveillance on the M7 (Kildare), starting from next week.

According to Gardaí, since roadworks have commenced on the M7 route between Junction 8 and Junction 11, more than 500 fixed penalty notices have been issued by An Garda Síochána to motorists for exceeding the speed limit.

During this period 32 motorists have been prosecuted for dangerous driving.

Recent incidents include:
• very high speeds
• poor lane discipline
• vehicles breaking through crash barriers

To slow people down, Gardaí will deploy two GoSafe Vans on this route to further enhance enforcement activity by local Roads Policing Units.

This latest initiative will be rolled out from next Monday (26 November).

No loss of life has occurred on the M7 since roadworks began, but several recent incidents have put motorists at very serious risk. In the past week alone a truck crashed through a barrier in an effort to avoid slowing traffic up ahead.

Separately, a van collided with a barrier and landed in the works area, putting those working on the road at considerable risk.
