They were called to a "large public gathering" in College Court in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Gardaí are investigating after a house in Castletroy, Limerick, was extensively damaged during a large gathering, believed to have been a student party, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Gardaí asking for public assistance "as part of an investigation into a burglary and criminal damage at a domestic residence" after they were called to a "large public gathering" in College Court, close to the University of Limerick, shortly before 1am on October 7.

Footage, which has been widely circulating online, shows people laughing and shouting as the damage is carried out.

At one point, a male voice can be heard saying, “Oh my god”, while another says, “This is f***ed”, while a female voice can also heard saying, “No lads, every f***ing room, welcome to our house tour.”

Another video shows a group of people gathered outside as a mattress is thrown from a window, while other footage appears to show significant damage being done to rooms inside the property.

The house has been designated a crime scene and a technical examination has been carried out by Gardaí. They are also reviewing footage as part of their investigation.

In a statement to JOE.ie, Sinn Féin TD for the area Maurice Quinlivan, said: "The videos of the behaviour of some students at College Court was extremely disturbing. Such wanton destruction of private property is disgraceful, especially in the middle of a housing crisis that impacts so many students as well.

"I am confident that the Gardaí and University authorities will identify those involved in this appalling incident. It is simply unacceptable."

He continued: "Most students across Limerick behave well and contribute greatly to the fabric of Limerick, and this incident while shocking should not deflect from that. Most students will be rightly appalled by this behaviour."

University of Limerick has confirmed it is “aware of an incident that took place off campus and that an investigation by An Garda Siochana is underway”.

They added: “UL strongly promotes responsible behaviour and positive engagement with the community.

"While the vast majority of students are respectful and valued members of the community, the university recognises that instances of antisocial behaviour, including property damage, public disorder and other actions that negatively impact residents, are a matter of serious concern."

“There are mechanisms within the university student code of conduct for breaches of the code to be dealt with and complaints made to the University about individuals are taken very seriously," the university concluded.

Gardaí are seeking witnesses who were in the vicinity of College Court, Castletroy and the surrounding residential streets between 12.00am and 2.00am on Wednesday 7th October 2026.

They are also appealing to anyone who may have camera footage, including motorists with dash cam footage from the area during that time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Henry Street Garda Station on (061) 212 400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Investigations are ongoing.
