Gardaí investigate letter from IT Sligo student threatening to shoot fellow students in exam hall

Conor Heneghan

A Garda investigation is currently ongoing.

Gardaí have launched an investigation following the discovery of a letter allegedly penned by an IT Sligo student threatening to shoot a number of fellow students in an exam hall next month.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed to JOE that Gardaí in Sligo are investigating the discovery of a letter in a room in a third-level college in Sligo on Tuesday, December 6. The matter was reported to Gardaí by staff at IT Sligo and the contents of the letter are currently the subject of an investigation.

The author of the letter claims to have been bullied by fellow students, who, the author of the letter claims, pick on him because of his poor English.

The student claims in the letter, which was discovered last week and anonymously sent to JOE by a student in IT Sligo, to have purchased a fully-loaded Glock 17 pistol on the dark web and promises to “smoke them all” in an exam hall on January 15.

“I plan to kill six students within the period of ten minutes, slowly and painfully,” the student writes.

“I will have two magazines with equal amounts of 40 bullets.”

The full text of the letter can be read following the picture below.

Letter towards my mean class members.

I feel very sad because my class members bully me, they are a bunch of dicks, they pick on me because my English is very bad.

I promised myself that I’d bring a fully loaded Glock 17 and smoke them all. I bought the gun on the dark web on Silk Road. It’s going to come by the 9th of December and I’ll bring it to an exam hall on the 15th of January and use it then.

I plan to kill six students within the period of ten minutes, slowly and painfully. I will have two magazines with equal amounts of 40 bullets.

A statement released by IT Sligo on the matter read: “The Institute is aware of a recent incident on campus where an unsigned note was left in a classroom. The matter was immediately referred to the Gardaí who have conducted a series of enquiries.

“The safety and security of our students and staff is paramount. While the Gardaí assessment is that there is no viable immediate threat, their investigation is continuing. All appropriate security arrangements are in place – and the Institute continues to consult with the Gardaí on a daily basis.”
