Clever, but not at all safe…
Gardaí have warned road users after they encountered a dangerously modified mountain bike being used on Irish roads on Tuesday.
The bike had been modified and fitted with a two stroke engine along with a small petrol tank, and it was being used on public roads.
Upon stopping the road user, Gardaí discovered that the motorist had no insurance or driver’s licence. They were also not wearing a helmet.
As you can see from the image below, there are no front brakes on the bike and the exhaust emerges quite close to where the rider’s left leg would be placed. These are just two potential safety hazards on the makeshift moped.
Gardaí have warned people with similar modifications not to attempt to use them on the roads.

This warning comes after Gardaí issued a warning a number of weeks ago about modified trucks in use on Irish roads.
Gardaí issued the following warning over their social media channels:
Gardaí are appealing to all road users in particular haulage companies and truck drivers, that altering any vehicle like this is highly dangerous and illegal.
Gardaí encountered this truck driving in Dublin recently. Whilst the driver thought ‘It looks cool’ this poses a serious risk to cyclists, pedestrians and all other road users. The driver of the truck was required to remove theses before continuing.
Anyone who encounters a modified truck should report the incident to Gardaí.
