Gardaí has launched an investigation into alleged an assault on GAA referee in Clare.
The incident occurred at an underage GAA match in Kilrush at around 8.40pm on Monday, June 29.
Gardaí revealed a teenage boy had also sustained injuries during the incident, and added that they are aware of video footage circulating online.
Clare GAA chairperson, Kieran Keating, condemned the incident in a statement, expressing 'profound shock and disappointment' over the incident, which he dubbed a 'bitter step backwards'.
Additionally, Mr Keating reassured that the incident is being taken 'very seriously'.
He further confirmed there was 'some form of incident' but said he could not give too much detail on it without having the referee's report of the game itself.
"What I will say is it is important our referees get respected and the support they deserve when doing our games."
He added that should the review finds the referee committed an infraction, the relevant sanctions will be imposed, with suspensions of "'8 weeks or 96 weeks or double that'.
"We have a great cohort of referees in both codes in our county and over the past number of years we have driven the message of 'Respect for the Referee', with the aim of retaining and recruiting the increasing number of referees we need for our growing schedule of games.
"Thus, it is a bitter step backwards when any mentor, player, parent or supporter commits any infraction upon a referee, and particularly a physical assault of the nature reported upon in this case.
"We have had many years without any such incident and it is very disheartening to all of us who love our games that this would happen at an underage game, or any game, in Clare in 2026."
