As Hurricane Ophelia swirls upward towards the Leinster region, Gardaí have provided an update on where to avoid.

The statement warns people to avoid areas where large trees have already fallen and disrupted roads. While the list is not exhaustive, it includes: Leeson St, Deansgrange, Kilshane Cross, Northwood Ave, Griffith Ave, Knocksedan &  Naul Road near Dublin Airport, Monestry road, Lower Road Lucan, Tower Road, Castleknock. St James Hospital can currently only be accessed via the Rialto Entrance.

The Gardaí further report that power lines are down in Swords. The public is advised to stay well clear of downed power lines. The situation has resulted in power outages in the areas.

The statement repeats earlier pleas for the public to refrain from any non-essential journeys and to stay well clear of coastal areas and waterways at all times.

The storm is expected to batter Dublin and Leinster over the next several hours.

Hurricane Ophelia has already done substantial damage in the Munster reason. Fatalities have been reported in both Waterford and Tipperary.
