Gardaí release funeral details for Detective Colm Horkan

The funeral will take place on Sunday.

An Garda Síochána has released the details of funeral services for Detective Colm Horkan, who was fatally wounded in the line of duty earlier this week.

Horkan, who had served as a guard for 24 years, was fatally wounded with his own weapon after engaging a man in Castlerea, Roscommon shortly before midnight on Wednesday. A man is under arrest in connection with the incident.

On Friday evening, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed that the funeral mass for Detective Horkan will be observed at midday on Sunday (21 June) Sat St. James’ Church in Horkan’s home town of Charlestown, Mayo.

Gardaí say they will be taking every precaution to ensure that Garda Horkans’ funeral and burial is performed in accordance with the spirit of the health and safety guidelines, while affording Detective Garda Colm Horkan formal State Honours.

In adherence with Public Health Guidelines members of An Garda Síochána, Garda Staff, Garda Reserves and retired members of An Garda Síochána seeking to show their respects and express their sympathy and solidarity with the family of Detective Garda Colm Horkan will parade at their local Garda Station/permanent assigned Garda Station and will observe a formal public minute of silence silence at midday on Sunday 21 June 2020.
