It’s unclear whether the attack was pre-planned or spontaneous.

Gardai in Blanchardstown are investigating an alleged sexual assault in west Dublin on Monday 16 July.

Speaking to JOE, the incident allegedly happened in the Blanchardstown area approximately 2pm and saw one man grope one woman before fleeing in the opposite direction. The attack happened in broad daylight.

According to the Irish Independent, this isn’t the first instance of this to happen in the area in recent times. The woman involved in Monday’s attack is believed to be fifth sexual assault victim in the area since the middle of May.

A prior incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday, 20 June at Corduff Park in Blanchardstown when a man reportedly attacked an American tourist. A man in his 30s was charged in relation to the incident and appeared at a sitting of Blanchardstown District Court last month.

All attacks appear to involve one woman and one male. It is unsure, as of yet, whether the attacks are related or performed by one person or several.

In the first three months of 2018, 293 sexual offences were recorded in Dublin.

Clíona Saidléar, the Executive Director of the Rape Crisis Network of Ireland said in a recent statement that “In 2017 all recorded sexual offences rose by almost 17% with rape up 28% and sexual assault (non-aggravated) up 15%.

“These are very significant increases.”
