A man claiming to be from Phone Watch is scamming people out of money.

Gardaí in Cork, Tipperary and Limerick are urging members of the public to be vigilant after a number of scams were reported in these areas.

The scam involves a man, purporting to be from Phone Watch, taking debit cards from people and withdrawing money from their accounts.

Gardaí reported one such incident on Saturday, 29 February, where the man, who is described as having dark hair and glasses, called to a house in Clonmel in Tipperary. After telling the owner he worked for Phone Watch, he was invited inside.

The man produced Phone Watch paraphernalia and literature and convinced the owner he could upgrade their system for a small fee.

The victim produced their debit card for payment and entered his pin on a small device the man was carrying. The man then handed back a different card and withheld the victim’s card unbeknownst to them.

Cash was then withdrawn from a number of banks in Tipperary and Limerick on Saturday, 29 February and Sunday, 1 March.

Investigations are ongoing into these incidents and Gardaí are appealing to the public to always be careful providing details to anyone not known to them calling to their home, particularly bank details.
