The timetable for the 69-year-old’s departure from leadership is expected in the next few hours.
Gerry Adams is to address the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis in Dublin today, where it is anticipated that he will seek re-election as the Sinn Féin party leader.
However, it is then expected that he will announce just how much longer he intends to remain in his position of power.
There has been a plan set in place, since before the death of Martin McGuinness earlier this year.
Adams – who was been the party leader since 1983 – would be replaced by current Deputy Leader and Dublin MP Mary Lou McDonald, who is the most likely candidate to take on a larger leadership role upon his departure.
Additionally, Michelle O’Neill would take on the role of Sinn Féin’s leader in Stormont.
According to The Guardian, however, sources within the party state that Adams will still hold the centre of power in Sinn Féin from behind the scenes long after his official successor replaces him as party leader.
Either way, it should give him a lot more time to play around with his favourite Snapchat filters…
