Glen Hansard celebrated at public wake in Dublin today

The wake is being held at the Baroque Chapel at the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

The Oscar-winning singer-songwriter died after a road crash at the Strawberry Beds near Lucan in the early hours of Wednesday morning, July 29.

The 56-year-old was also known as the lead singer of popular Dublin band The Frames.

A public wake is being held in the Baroque Chapel at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin until 4pm today, August 3.

Mr Hansard's funeral on Tuesday, August 4, will be open to the public, although access is expected to be extremely limited due to the large crowds anticipated.

The funeral service will begin at 1.30pm in St Patrick’s Cathedral and will also be livestreamed. Music throughout the service will be provided by family members and friends.

Messages of sympathy and remembrance were shared throughout the week by members of the public and well-known figures, with people including Billie Eilish and Barack Obama among those paying their respects.

Grammy-winning Amercian singer Billie Eilish said she 'wouldn’t be who I am today without Glen', while Obama described the Dublin man as a 'great musician'.

U2 star Bono also shared a statement honouring Hansard, dubbing him 'otherworldly' and 'a smiling rascal if you needed him to be'.

Musicians gathered in Dublin city centre during the week to perform Hansard’s songs near the site of his annual Christmas busking event.

He is survived by his wife Maire, son Christy, brothers Gary, Dylan, Richard and David, sister Martina, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, as well as extended family and friends.
