Government agrees to hold abortion referendum at the end of May

Alan Loughnane

Leo Varadkar

Big news this evening…

The government has agreed to hold an abortion referendum in the first half of 2018.

The Cabinet also agreed that the Referendum Bill should include wording to repeal the Eighth Amendment, and also wording to be added into the Constitution to enable the Oireachtas to legislate on this matter.

The public will be asked if they want to retain the Amendment or repeal and put a provision in the constitution to give the Oireachtas the power to set abortion laws.

Taoiseach Leo Vardkar said that he would be advocating a Yes vote and the referendum would take place before the end of May.
