The cabinet is to decide on Tuesday whether to proceed with the planned move to Phase 4 of reopening society and business on Monday.
Phase 4 would mean that pubs which don’t serve food and nightclubs could reopen while outdoor gatherings of up to 500 people and indoor gatherings of 100 would be allowed.
Speaking on RTÉ’s This Week on Saturday, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly refused to be drawn on whether or not pubs would be reopening from next Monday.
Donnelly said he sympathised with the plight of pub owners but said the government would ultimately be following the public health advice on the matter.
The National Public Health Emergency Team is due to meet today to consider what recommendations it will be giving to the government.
The cabinet is also expected to consider updating the Green List for foreign travel.
Ireland had been due to enter Phase 4 of reopening society and business on 20 July but it was delayed until 10 August following an increase in the reproductive number of the virus.
Ireland has had 267 confirmed cases of Covid-19 over the past five days alone, while Acting Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health has urged the public to stay the course and continue social distancing, hand washing, avoiding crowds and wearing face coverings where appropriate.
