An insight into how bad things had gotten…

Leader of the Green Party Eamon Ryan has revealed that the government almost ran out of money twice during their term in office with Fianna Fáil.

According to Ryan, on two occasions, September 2008 and Autumn 2010, there was not enough funds for the government to pay public wages.

His comments followed a report in today’s Sunday Times which claims that the Irish army were on standby to mark Euro notes as punts in 2012 when there was a risk of the Euro collapse.

Ryan was part of a broad coalition involving Fianna Fáil and many Independents claimed that the Irish government were almost unable to pay the wages of many professionals including teachers and doctors.

Speaking on Today FM, Ryan said, “That happened twice, once in September 2008, which was a real run in the bank a physical run as well as an electronic one.

“Then again in autumn 2010, and that case it was a wholesale run, there was €2-3bn leaving every day.”
