Here’s how Hurricane Gert is going to affect Ireland this weekend

It's headed our way.

No need to go battening down any hatches or anything like that.

You might have heard word of Hurricane Gert making its presence felt in the Atlantic Ocean in recent days and you might also have heard that it’s headed our way pretty soon.

Well, it is, but rather than bringing with it the type of weather one would normally associate with a hurricane, it’s only likely to result in slightly exaggerated conditions than we’re already more than accustomed to in these parts.

Speaking to JOE on Thursday morning, Deirdre Lowe of Met Éireann said: “The remnants of it (Hurricane Gert) are going to track from the south Atlantic at the weekend and the early days of next week between Iceland and Ireland, so it is going to keep the weather unsettled over Ireland and Britain.

Basically, it will result in changeable, unsettled conditions, but it’s hard to put detail on it at the moment.

“It looks like on Sunday it’ll build up quite warm, humid air over Ireland but there will be some rain from it, particularly over the north and the west. The remnants of it are still around on Monday so it will be quite humid on Monday as well with some heavy showers,” Lowe added.

“At the moment, it’s not predicting anything severe but the winds could get quite strong at times in the northwest. It’s hard to put exact detail on it for the time being, but it does look as if it’s going to make the weather unsettled for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of next week with heavy showers at times.”

So there you have it, a little bit hairy in the northwest but more of the same for the rest of the country; as usual, prepare for a little bit of everything this weekend.
