Homeowners will be able to report anyone they see breaking the “hosepipe ban”. The prohibition has been issued by Uisce Éireann as a six-week preventive measure to protect water supplies.

The order will affect Dublin, south Tipperary, parts of Kildare, Meath, Wexford, and Wicklow.

The ban will start after midnight on Thursday and remain until 26 August. However, depending on the weather conditions, it could be lifted earlier or extended.

The ban prohibits watering gardens, washing vehicles, and filling paddling pools to protect essential supplies and services for hospitals and homes.

Breaking the ban can lead to strict penalties, including fines up to €5,000.

While Uisce Éireannc doesn’t intend to pursue people to report one another, homeowners are allowed to report anyone they see breaking the housepipe ban by calling  Uisce Éireann’s customer care team on 1800 278 278.

Uisce Éireann has also urged people to reduce their non-essential water use, considering how the warm temperatures have led to a significant increase in its use. For instance, it said that domestic customer water use is around 20% above normal levels.

Some of the measures that Uisce Éireann has recommended to citizens to reduce water consumption include re-using household water in the garden and taking shorter showers.

As high temperatures are expected to continue into next week, Uisce Éireann and Met Éireann advise people to take precautions and be aware of potential heat impacts.

Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Galway, and Mayo were covered by the Status Yellow high temperature at 1pm yesterday and will last until 7am Wednesday, with temperatures up to 27ºC.

The high temperature advisory is in place nationwide until Friday.

Despite a chance of isolated showers in the southwest on Thursday, high temperatures will continue to dominate until the end of the week.

The weekend is expected to be dry with temperatures reaching 22 to 26 degrees.
