Huge new change to the Junior Cert will allow far more students to pass

Carl Kinsella

Is this an easy way out?

Starting next year, students who achieve only 20% on their final written exam will be deemed to have passed the exam with a ‘partially achieved’ score.

According to The Irish Times, there will be further changes to the old ‘honours’, ‘pass’ and ‘fail’ trichotomy. Students who earn between 90% and 100% will be awarded a ‘distinction’, with 75% to 89% being worth of a ‘higher merit’ score.

Anything below 20% will receive the dreaded NG – not graded.

This reform will be piloted in the final written exam for Junior Cert English in the academic year 2016-2017 before being expanded to all subjects.

You know what this means! Less time spent studying, more time for activities.
