He will plead guilty to federal charges.

Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden has been charged with federal tax and weapons offences.

The Justice Department said the 53-year-old had struck a deal to resolve the charges.

He will plead guilty to two federal tax misdemeanors and one charge tied to gun possession, according to the filing in a federal court in Delaware.

Biden will appear in court to plead guilty to the charges at a future date, CNN reports.

The deal struck with the Justice Department ends their long-running investigation into the president’s second son, and avoids a trial that would have led to weeks of distracting headlines for the White House.

Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Chris Clark, said it was he believed the five-year investigation into his client “is resolved”.

He told NBC News: “Hunter will take responsibility for two instances of misdemeanour failure to file tax payments when due pursuant to a plea agreement.

“A firearm charge, which will be subject to a pretrial diversion agreement and will not be the subject of the plea agreement, will also be filed by the government.

“I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life. He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward.”
