Iarnród Éireann strike action called off with just 2 hours to spare

Talks at the Workplace Relations Commission concluded at 4am

Trains are running as normal this morning after a planned stoppage by Iarnród Éireann workers was called off.

Talks at the Workplace Relations Commission concluded successfully at 4am.

Train drivers are looking for payment for past productivity and improved working hours. While no agreement was reached this morning, the matter is now being referred to the Labour Court.

According to RTÉ, the NBRU (National Bus and Rail Union) and SIPTU were “angry and frustrated” at how the talks had been conducted and that an agreement had not been reached.

However, they reluctantly agreed to suspend industrial action at the request of the Workplace Relations Commission, and Iarnród Éireann apologised to commuters for any inconvenience caused.

Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe said: “The fact that the threatened strike action at Irish Rail was called off in the early hours of the morning, at nearly 4am, will come as a welcome relief to many commuters, although this may have come too late for many of those planning to use the trains this morning.

“Clearly there were determined efforts by all involved to seek a resolution to the dispute, which unfortunately was not possible. I welcome the fact that matters will now be discussed further at the Labour Court.

“As I have said many times in the past, the industrial relations resolution bodies of the State are the ones best placed to find a solution and to mediate in such instances.”
