Breaking news on Monday.

Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa has been acquitted of all charges according to reports from Cairo.

The 20-year old, from Firhouse in Dublin, was arrested during protests against former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in Cairo in August 2013.

His three sisters were also acquitted at today’s hearing. They had also been arrested but later returned to Dublin after being released on bail.

In a statement last year, Amnesty International said: “Ibrahim is a Prisoner of Conscience detained solely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly.

“His continuing imprisonment represents an inexcusable violation of both international and Egyptian law.”
