Micheál Martin has suggested that influencers could be used to help communicate with young people about Covid-19.

Speaking to Pat Kenny on Newstalk on Monday morning, the Taoiseach said that “maybe more influencers” are needed to help young people understand the dangers of Covid-19.

“This is happening”, he said about the use of influencers.

This came after Kenny said that young people “are not listening” to public health advice, to which Martin replied that many young people are listening, and are adhering to the advice.

In the same interview, he also discussed the possibility of other counties moving up to Level Three on the new safety roadmap, specifically saying he is concerned about Donegal, Louth and Waterford.

He said: “I think NPHET will advise us on a continuing basis in relation to the rest of the country. You’re right, Louth, Donegal and Waterford are giving rise for concern.

“The CMO Ronan Glynn has said this to us. Obviously, that will be closely monitored. It is a significant decision to move up to Level Three for any county, so that will be carefully considered.

“NPHET will advise the government in relation to those counties and the broader situation.”
