The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning.

An investigation is under way into an alleged racist verbal attack on Rose of Tralee winner, Kirsten Mate Maher.

It’s understood that Gardaí were called to a fast food outlet in Kilkenny in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Maher and her boyfriend were allegedly verbally abused in the takeaway at around 3am.

Gardaí confirmed that enquiries are ongoing into an incident in the Kilkenny takeaway on Sunday morning.

Steve Cronly of the Rose of Tralee festival committee said the Rose of Tralee was aware of the incident and Maher intends to highlight the fact that society in Ireland is becoming more diverse and there’s no place for racism.

“Regrettably, Kirsten has been subjected to racial abuse from people in the past and it is something that she and many others in Ireland have to deal with on a regular basis,” Cronly said.

“As the Rose of Tralee, Kirsten intends to highlight the fact that society in Ireland is becoming more diverse and that there is no place for racism.”
