An investigation into the how almost one million false breath tests were logged on the An Garda Síochána computer systems has revealed that there were another 500,000 false tests.

A not yet published report has found that Gardaí made up figures in a number of cases and they had no explanation for the falsified figures, some of which were exaggerated by as much as 300%.

According to RTÉ, the report by Assistant Garda Commissioner Michael O’Sullivan also cites some possible contributory issues including IT failures, oversight and a misinterpretation of policy.

The inquiry proposes that disciplinary action be taken against individual gardaí but it’s not expected that there will be any criminal action brought against gardaí as a result of these reports.

While the figure of false breath tests rose by about 50% over what was previously thought, the period examined stretches from 2016 back to 2009. Two years further than was previously examined.

The Cabinet will be meeting in Leinster House on Wednesday for the first meeting of the Dáil term and the report is on the agenda having been sent to the Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan.

A statement is expected to be issued by the Minister following the meeting on Wednesday, with the report also expected to be published on Wednesday.
