Ireland could get a new city if this motion passes next Monday…

Introducing the brand new city of… Tralee?

Tralee, Co. Kerry is seeking city status. According to the Irish Times, Fianna Fáil councillor for Tralee Thomas McEllistrim has made Tralee’s recognition as a city a priority of his.

McEllistrim is quoted in the Irish Times as saying that if Kilkenny is of sufficient population to be designated a city, then so too should Tralee be. As it stands, Kilkenny’s population stands at roughly 1000 more than Tralee’s.

The motion for city-hood is to be put before Tralee’s Municipal District next Monday, and is expected to be extremely popular with the locals.

However, it is likely that the motion would need support on a more national level before Tralee achieves its big city dreams – with approval needed in the form of parliamentary legislation.
