Ireland has been named the best destination in Europe

Carl Kinsella

Ireland has been named the best European tourism destination in the Travel Weekly Readers Choice Awards.

The ceremony took place in New York City on Saturday night, and Ireland came out on top ahead of the likes of England, Italy, France, Germany and Spain.

Travel from the United States to Ireland has been booming for the last few years, with 2016 breaking the record for the fourth year running for the number of tourists who’ve made the journey, according to Newstalk.

Tourism Ireland CEO Niall Gibbons was evidently overjoyed at the accolade, saying: ““This award is really good news, coming at the end of another record-breaking year for Irish tourism from the US and as we prepare to kick off another extensive promotional drive in 2017, in this all-important market.”
