Wrap up warm: Temperatures set to drop below freezing in the coming days

As the clock ticks down to Christmas, it’s about to get cooler outside.

Storm Diana is barely behind us, but Ireland will have to endure a few more days of fairly miserable weather before witnessing a return to conditions more typical of this time of year early next week.

After a fairly rotten week for the most part, a fairly rotten weekend awaits, with a risk of hail on Friday, largely damp conditions on Saturday and persistent rain on Sunday, with areas in the west and north of the country set to be the worst affected.

Amidst all that misery, there will be some spells of dry and bright weather on Friday and Saturday afternoon and spells of chilly weather that will serve as a reminder that we’re entering the final month of the year.

The mercury will drop to as low as one degree above freezing on Friday night, but it will be Monday night when we really start to feel a chill as temperatures will drop to as low as -2 degrees, with widespread frost likely as a result.

Indeed, Met Éireann is forecasting a number of frosty nights “during the early days of next week” and the outlook in general is not at all positive, with “cold and blustery” conditions promised on Tuesday, when rain will become “widespread and heavy” followed by “cold, windy and showery” conditions on Wednesday.

Overall, not ideal conditions to be out and about at a time when there’s plenty of festive activity in the run up to Christmas, but if you are outdoors, be prepared for all eventualities.
