In some of the counties, the strong winds are ‘likely to cause’ travel disruption.

Weather warnings have been issued to seven counties as Ireland is to be hit with “strong and gusty” winds on Wednesday (31 January).

Met Éireann‘s forecast for the day says that cloud, wind and rain will spread from the northwest southeastwards.

“Fresh to strong southwest winds ahead of the rain will veer westerly and moderate as the rain clears through the evening,” it adds.

This is as highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees are predicted.

Ahead of Wednesday, Met Éireann has published a Status Yellow wind warning for the counties of Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

Scheduled to be valid from 8am to 1pm on Wednesday, it reads: “Strong and gusty southwest winds. Impacts: wave overtopping.”

On Wednesday night, Met Éireann’s forecast says that temperatures in Ireland could fall to as low as -1 with “frost and ice likely”.

As for the Irish meteorological service’s outlook for the rest of the week, it reads: “Mild and breezy with scattered outbreaks of rain, mainly affecting Atlantic counties.”
