Ireland’s Housing crisis summed up by these unbelievably bad property listings

Because it's really really bad.

Whether it’s a room so small you’d struggle to swing a cat in it or a house that appears to have seen better days, the standard of some properties can be hard to believe.

And then there’s the price.

With homes in high demand and supply still under pressure, people are being forced to look beyond their wish lists and make some pretty big compromises.

These three listings show just how creative the Dublin rental market has become and what prospective renters are up against right now.

D1 Room share

Two female-only double rooms with bunk beds are being advertised for €600 per person per month on Hill Street, Dublin 1.

The apartment comes with three double bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and one bathroom, and can accommodate six people, because apparently Dublin landlords have decided personal space is now an optional extra!

Available from August 29 with a €600 security deposit required and electricity is, naturally, not included, because why stop at €600 for the privilege of sharing a bedroom when there are still utility bills to add?

While €600 might sound relatively affordable by Dublin standards, apparently 'affordable' now means only having to share your bedroom with one other person, rather than the entire housing market. Lovely.

Room in D8

An ensuite room for a single person is available in Dublin 8 for the very reasonable price of €1,300 per month, with a €1,300 deposit. Bills are included, so at least there’s one thing you won’t have to worry about.

The room itself offers a spacious double bed, wooden floors and plenty of character. And by character we mean the walls appear to be in the middle of a long-term disagreement with the paint. Why waste money on wallpaper when you can simply let the plaster reveal itself?

Still, the bills are included, the transport links are handy and it’s Dublin 8, so apparently €1,300 a month is the going rate for an ensuite, a bed and a complimentary tour of the building’s previous decorating decisions.

D2 Room share

€700 a month to share a bedroom with two other people, and if you’re unlucky enough to get the bottom bunk, congratulations: you also get to share the bed.

The listing describes it as a 'bright room with double bed downstairs and upstairs individual size', which is certainly one way of describing what appears to be a three-person sleeping arrangement. Because why rent a room when you can rent approximately one third of a bed?

At €700 a month, I’d personally be looking for someone responsible enough to explain why I’m paying full rent for half a bed.
