SuperValu has been named as Ireland’s favourite supermarket chain, bumping Tesco down into second place.

SuperValu had a 24.6% share of Ireland’s grocery market in the 12 weeks leading up to 8th November, according to the Irish Independent.

A poll by research group Kantar Worldpanel showed that Tesco have slipped down to second place, with a market share of 24.1%.

The top spot has changed hands between the two a couple of times this year. SuperValu broke Tesco’s ten-year stranglehold of top spot earlier this year, only to see Tesco fight back and holding the number one spot until this month.

“This is the strongest growth rate recorded by SuperValu since August 2013, which the retailer has achieved by encouraging more repeat shopping trips,” according to Kantar director David Berry.

“The average consumer has visited the retailer on two additional occasions and spent an extra €16 over the past quarter when compared with last year.”

Dunnes Stores are in third spot with a 23.7%, with Lidl and Aldi enjoying an 8.7% and 8.5% share respectively.

“The grocery market is arguably the most competitive retail sector and the latest figures emphasise this, with the three biggest retailers each within one percentage point of each other’s market share,” added Berry.
