Here are the counties that have the highest level of rat infestations in Ireland

Rat

Unpleasant reading for some.

Unsurprisingly, given its larger population relative to the other counties in Ireland, Dublin is the most rodent-infested county in Ireland.

Rentokil are responsible for removing rat and mice infestations around the country and they’ve stated that they’ve made more call-outs in the capital than any other location around Ireland.

Dublin came out on top of this list due to the amount of construction work in the city, the warm summer, and the subsequent drop in temperatures that occurred later in the year.

Overall, Dublin accounted for 32% of all call-outs.

Galway was in second place with (11%), while Clare (9%) and Limerick (8%) completed the top four.

The company stated that the hot summer did account for an increase in the amount of callouts to deal with these rodents because, unfortunately, it provided ideal conditions for rodent populations to thrive.

Sadly, with the weather conditions taking a colder turn, the company have now warned that the plummeting temperatures will result in the large rat and mouse population starting to move indoors.

On this note, they’ve warned households and businesses to be vigilant as the winter sets in.

To avoid attracting rodents into your home, these steps can help:

  • Keep foodstuffs in metal or glass containers with tight fitting lids
  • Tidy inside the house and around the garden – less clutter means less places to hide
  • Put outdoor rubbish bags in metal bins with securely fitted lids to stop them feeding on the contents
  • Clean up pet food and bird seed debris, and store pet food in robust containers with fitted lids, preferably above ground level
  • Keep gardens free from debris – If you have a compost heap, don’t include organic food waste, as this will attract them
