Calls and emails have been monitored…

Reports in the Sunday Times claim that the calls of Irish citizens who are suspected of involved in Islamic extremist groups have been monitored by the Defence Forces, and this information passed on to intelligence services such as the CIA.

It is not just the CIA who’ve been provided with this information, the report claims that it has been passed to other foreign intelligence services as well.

In Ireland, the exchange and disclosure of information gathered from intercepts on mobile phones, landline or emails are not governed by any legislation but a warrant to record a phone call or email must be signed by either the justice or defence Minster.

The information given to the CIA mainly concerns Muslims who have become Irish citizens.

According to the Sunday paper, the CIA has also offered to train members of the Defence Forces in techniques to identify jihadists.
